Your Spanish course in Buenos Aires
Clearly defined in a Tango song, Buenos
Aires is the Queen of Cities. Perhaps its secret
lies in having everything: culture, architecture, art, music,
and non stop nightlife. Together, it all combines to form
a fascinating city, worth discovering block by block.
The city of Buenos Aires is South America’s
most cosmopolitan city. Its port is situated along the River
Plate and it is surrounded by the “Greater Buenos Aires”,
where most of the country’s population has settled.
The city of Buenos Aires takes its name from the province
of which it is a part and covers most of the fertile and productive
pampas plain. Buenos Aires is the tenth most populated city
of the world, with a 12.2 million population representing
almost the third part of the total population of the Argentine
Republic.
Buenos Aires - an European city in Argentina
Buenos Aires is said to be like a European city but in South
America. This is partly because most of its immigrants came
from West Europe, particularly from Spain and Italy, and this
resulted in an idiosyncrasy represented by a melting pot of
different races that played an important role in the founding
of the city.
There are typical neighbourhoods that show the marks left
by the immigrants, including La Boca, on the banks of the
Riachuelo, a place that maintains its Italian immigrant neighbourhood
characteristics almost intact: “Caminito”, “La
Vuelta de Rocha”, its vividly painted houses and the
landscapes immortalized by Benito Quinquela Martín
in his paintings.
Buenos Aires was born mimicking Europe, copying characteristics
from both Madrid and Paris. To many, this cocktail of styles
turned out better than the originals. However, Buenos Aires
[B.A.] also created its own heritage, adding to the mix some
sultry tangos, ubiquitous "colectivos", quaint cafés
and most of all, the flair of its residents, the proud "porteños".
Buenos Aires 24/7
And what can be said about B.A. at nightfall, Porteños
favourite time to celebrate their city and interact with each
other in a myriad of restaurants, coffeehouses, discotheques
and bars open until the wee hours. Your Spanish course in
Buenos Aires will be truly unforgettable!
