Málaga is often referred to as ‘the city of paradise’ for a reason. Located in sunny Andalucía in southern Spain, Málaga is the capital city of the Costa del Sol, a tourist haven that welcomes over 6 million visitors a year.
The city is renowned for its sub tropical climate, its beautiful beaches and also for its rich history. The Alcazabar, the Roman Theatre, Gibralfaro Castle and Málaga’s Cathedral are just a few of the many attractions. Málaga is also famed for being the birthplace of painter Pablo Picasso and the city houses a museum at his birthplace.
The locals, or Malagueños as they are better known, are notoriously friendly, even the cities coat of arms bears the words “most hospitable”, which helps the city to be a laid back and relaxed metropolis. Malaga has an abundance of shops, bars and modern discos for those that want to party and then party some more. However, Málaga´s rich history spans over 2,700 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world and when you combine this with its rich artistic heritage, it’s no wonder the city has been nominated for 2016 European Capital of Culture.
Although a modern city, you can still see and feel the influence of its assorted historical background, allowing it to cater to all types of visitors; those that want to discover the past and those that wish to contemplate the future. If none of that tempts you, Málaga’s weather certainly should. It has one of the warmest winters in Europe and an 8 month summer season, perfect for topping up that tan!

The Alcazaba – The city’s most distinctive building is a military fortress built by the Moors in the 11th century on the remains of a Romans fortress. From here you can also visiting the Gibralfaro castle on the adjoining hill and the more recently found Roman theatre which dates to the 2nd century. A great site for history buffs!
- The Cathedral – Built between 1528-1782 on the site of a mosque, The “Catherdal of Incarnation” was originally planned to have two towers, however lack of funds resulted in the completion of only one, giving rise to the name by which the cathedral is affectionately referred to, La Manquita, loosely interpreted as “one armed lady”. The interior has influences of the Renaissance and baroque styles.
Málaga Bullfighting Ring – Situated in Paseo de Reding, Malagueta’s Bullfighting ring has a capacity for 14.000 people. Inside the building there is a Bullfighting Museum which offers visitors an extensive tour through the world of bullfighting. If you want to attend an event, the Málaga bullfighting season begins in April and runs through until September.
- Santiago Church, was also built on the lot of a former mosque. With foundations dating back to 1490, it is the most ancient church in Málaga. Apart from the buildings Mudejar style tower, the church is also famous as it is the one Pablo Picasso was baptized in and Picasso’s first home on Plaza de la Merced is not far away.
Jardin Botanico Finca La Concepción, is not only one of the most beautiful and important tropical gardens in Spain but one of the best in all of Europe. The garden, declared an historical and artistic garden in 1943, has a luxurious tropical forest feel, with wonders around each corner. One of the highlights is the spring ‘explosion’ of the huge wisteria which clambers over the lacy ironwork of the gardens’ dining arbour
